In reception and year 1 (and above, if necessary), the teaching of spelling follow the progression of Little Wandle phonics programme. From year 2, children undertake timetabled spelling lessons. Year two children follow the Little Wandle spelling programme. Little Wandle Spelling builds on children’s knowledge of the alphabetic code and teaches them how to spell with confidence. The programme provides a seamless link from the core Little Wandle programme.

Within key stage two, children are taught to spell following the Spelling Shed scheme. This ensures spellings are taught in a comprehensive and progressive way. Phonic knowledge continues to underpin spelling after key stage 1; teachers draw pupils’ attention to GPCs that do and do not fit in with what has been taught so far. Pupils are taught to understand the role of morphology and etymology. Although particular GPCs in root words simply have to be learnt, teachers help pupils to understand relationships between meaning and spelling wherever relevant. The sounds/spelling patterns and associated year group words are taken from the National Curriculum.
