Art
At Cullingworth Village Primary School, Art and Design is all about exploring creativity, developing skills, and expressing ideas. Through hands-on projects, our pupils learn to experiment with different materials, techniques and styles, discovering the joy of making and the power of imagination.
Our ‘Creative Curriculum’ links Art with other subjects through engaging themes. In KS1, children develop their skills using a range of media and materials, building on what they learned in the Early Years. In LKS2, pupils explore the styles of a variety of artists and apply these techniques in their own creations. In upper KS2, children refine their skills, experiment with a wider range of materials, and develop their use of tools, continuing their learning during Creative Curriculum time.
We are also proud to be starting an exciting two-year Artsmark project, celebrating creativity and design across the school and providing pupils with high-quality, inspirational art experiences.
The national curriculum for Art and Design aims to ensure that all pupils:
• produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
• become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
• evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
• know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms
At Cullingworth, we don’t just create art; we nurture thinkers, innovators and confident artists for life.

Our Artist-in-Residence Project
This week, we welcomed Joanne from Mind the Gap as our Artist-in-Residence, supported by Anna James Clayton, thanks to Bradford 2025 - Capital of Culture. Children across school explored creativity inspired by Joanne’s visit to Haworth Moor, producing dance routines, drawings and mixed-media artwork using recycled materials. The sessions ended with an art gallery walk, where pupils shared their creations, showcasing imagination, collaboration and expression.
